The purpose of this qualification is to prepare a learner to operate as an Occupational Health and Safety Practitioner. An Occupational Health and Safety Practitioners serve as a facilitator and advisor to employees and management regarding safety and health aspects in the workplace including the monitoring and inspecting of the workplace and the recording and investigation of incidents and accidents. They also implement and maintain Occupational Health and Safety systems to ensure a safe and healthy work environment.
Occupational Health and Safety is a core element for the success of all enterprises globally. The right to work in a safe and healthy environment is entrenched in the South African Constitution. The accountability for Occupational Health and safety is shared by all stakeholders and there are well established global practices and processes for ensuring Occupational Health and Safety. Over the years the development and implementation of these systems have become a science on its own. Line managers are trained in these processes and a cadre of specialised employees has been established to develop, implement and monitor the effective use of these global best practices.
This qualification is aimed at building the competence levels of this cadre of employees. The qualification also covers the work that will be done by the legislated Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) representatives. This qualification meets a critical need in the industry. It is aligned with the National Development Strategy, and it will enable employees from the different technical work areas to embark on a career path in Occupational Health and Safety Management. All organisations in South Africa require the services of at least one Occupational Health and Safety Practitioner. The training for this cadre of employees is currently fragmented and done through a series of short courses. This qualification will standardise the training and will enhance the levels of compliance in this area.
The purpose of this
qualification is to prepare a learner to conduct the activities that will help
protect a natural resource by
monitoring the activities of workers, forecasting potential fire hazards, and
tracking wildlife, conducting soil inspections, test water quality and examine
plants and trees for any insect damage or diseases etc.
The purpose of this qualification is to prepare a learner to conduct the activities which includes assessment of pollution indicators, monitoring air quality and make recommendations to relevant authorities. Poor air quality caused by natural or man-made sources can affect or harm human health and/or the environment.
The purpose of this qualification is to prepare
a learner to conduct the activities and actions required to manage waste from its
inception to its final disposal. This includes the collection, transport,
treatment and disposal of waste, together with monitoring and regulation of the
waste management process.
The purpose of this qualification is to prepare a learner to operate as an Environmental Science Technician, who will be capable to execute environmental management functions and natural resources management practices in accordance with the regulatory framework for sustainable quality life, health and wellbeing.
This qualification enables learners to identify,
evaluate, advise and report on occupational safety, hygiene and environmental
factors, in occupational environments, which may have a detrimental effect on
the health and safety of workers in such environments. The qualification is designed
to be flexible and accessible. Learners credited with this qualification are
likely to be working in the occupational safety, hygiene and environmental
disciplines

This Qualification is to equip learners working in any type of workplace with a broad understanding and knowledge of Occupational Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) concepts and practices with sufficient detail to enable them to function in a safe and healthy way and to deal with health and safety problems and issues. It will also contribute to the further development of learners within this environment by providing articulation, recognition and mobility within this dynamic and changing environment.
Qualifying learners will be able to show responsibility, and independently and effectively manage themselves in the workplace regarding generic health and safety issues. Learners will be able to identify and evaluate occupational safety, health and environmental factors, in occupational environments, which may have a detrimental effect on health and safety of people in such environments. Learners credited with this Qualification are able to perform essential measurements and functions that promote a culture of health and safety in the workplace.
